I was going to Blog,as I always do this time of year on the iniquity of the British Honours system but decided against it having witnessed a most enjoyable football match referreed in the old fashioned way ,I dont know the name of the ref in the West Midlands League Division 1 game between Wombourne and Wellington Sports but he was a real breath of fresh air.
From the start he had a great relationship with the players keeping firm control but having a laugh and a joke at the same time, there were no cards flying around for the slightest infringement just a firm and occasionally jovial word to keerp the game flowing and 22 players on the pitch.
Firm,no hard tackles were flying in but the ref could spot where they were fair unlike so many nowdays who blow up for the slightest physical challenge,he kept the game flowing and even when there was a potential flare up he handled it with a calm word that exuded authority withoput bthe need to resort to the dreaded cards.
I dont know if the obligatory accessor was at the match but if so I hope he gave him a glowing report and 10/10,there are many officials at a much higher level who could have learned a lot from today's performance and I can but hope that he gets matches at a higher level that will benefit from his calm and considered performance.

TV Gems At Christmas
I usually find in amidst the dross of Soaps,Reality Shows and Film's repeated a million times over Christmas there is the odd gem usually tucked away late at night and this year was no exception.
BBC gave us Lapland about an extended family visiting the Father Christmas theme park experience in Finland and it was not the usual smaltzy sugar coated dross you would expect just funny well acted well written with the occasional dark moment to add to the quality.
On ITV Fast Freddie,The Widow & Me,the story line again of boy dying at Christmas shallow rich kid finds out what Christmas is all about can sound rather formulaic but this had a few twists and again was well written and acted, and anything with Tamzin Outhwaite in usually gets my vote.
Finally Sky with a succession of 15 minute shorts starring a succession of comedians dramatising incidents from their youth and as with the other two quality television.
No doubt next year will be the same with the usual Prime time dross but I do beg anyone reading this to go through next years TV guide with a fine tooth comb because quality TV does still exist at Christmas and its very satisfying when you hunt it down.
PS: Probably the same at Easter as well

A Good Old Fashioned Boxing Day
Back in my teens and early 20's Boxing day meant one thing,Football,it was the days when just because your friend or neighbour supported the other local team or teams you didn't call them scum and plaster invective all over the internet. (Well not that we had had the Internet)
No it was the days when on Boxing Day irrespexctive of who you supported you went to the match that was on,so us Wolves fan's would go to the Albion and vice versa and I do remember one occasion when neither Wolves or Albion were playing the attendance at Walsall went through the roof.
Well since my love of the top flight game has dwindled over the years Boxing Day has had nothing to do with Football but yesterday for a change there was a West Midland League match on,sadly not my beloved AFC Wulfrunians but probably the most historic of local derbies at this level Gornal Athletic v Dudley Town and what a game to celebrate Boxing day it was.
From the start it was end to end goals galore a couple of seriously dodgy refereeing decisions, although to be fair he got most things correct, and I was fortunate enough to get some decent photographs.
So thanks for a great afternoon guys and lets hope that more clubs at this level look to get a fixture on Boxing Day in the years to come
Oh and more photos of the match can be seen here
